Hot off the Californian press comes the news of this year's Oscar-nominated movies. As predicted in the introduction to the current Media Museum film brochure, the heavy hitters are Up in the Air (best picture, direction, actor, supporting actress), A Prophet (best foreign language film), and Precious (best film, direction, actress, supporting actress).
Also nominated are Colin Firth for A Single Man, Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon for Invictus, Jeff Bridge and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Crazy Heart, Stanley Tucci for The Lovely Bones and Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer for The Last Station. We will be playing the latter three here next month.

Then of course there is the unstoppable Avatar (best picture, direction and a host of technical awards), on its now-astonishing run at the box office worldwide.
